Trendsetter or Nah?

Many fashion blogs are talking about trends and where to get those pieces to join in this fall, but should you?

I’ve been to parties where there are themes, and it generally helps set the tone for everybody, but then I’ve witnessed many people come dressed the same, HEAD TO TOE! The jersey and bubble skirts have seen better days, and some capri leggings have been styled to perfection. But a kitten heel and polka dot shirt styled with it will only do so much if 5 people are in that same fit too.

I know you can make trends work within your personal style without looking like a carbon copy of the next person at the same function. What are you known for when people see you? Is it the oversized pieces? The small top, big bottom look? All black all the time? Bright and bold colors? Graphic tees? A NAAAAAASTY shoe? Or is your body the outfit?!?! It took me a minute to find what I liked, and to this day, I’m always looking to try something new, but the key to all of this is I know what works and move on if it doesn’t.

The main thing that I’ve noticed while dilly-dallying is the decline of activewear in every setting. Of course, you’ll still see Lulu and Alo in your local coffee shop or even in the grocery stores. But I absolutely love the trouser look, especially on men. It can be a simple trouser or balloon style. Even if it’s not much, it looks like thought and effort played a part in getting dressed. I’ve seen some ladies take their own spin with the trend and pair the trousers with a T-shirt, crop top, or dress it all the way up with a bad pair of shoes.

Speaking of shoes, have you noticed that ballet and tabi-toe style shoes are around more than ever? SZA is dropping her first Vans collection with tabi-style shoes. I may not like the style for me, but I have seen some looks where those shoes are the cherry on top.

Colorful shoes have also been around, but with trends, they always find their way back front and center. Take a simple outfit (like a white top and some jeans) and pair it with shoes that will be the statement wherever you go. Let your accessories play along with the color theme to bring the entire fit together. I have a few new pairs of shoes that command attention even if I’m wearing them or not. Going forward, I want to get more shoes that are different colors, because black and brown aren’t the only colors that can carry me through this Fall.

Also expect to see a push for oversized jackets over the next few weeks. And not just any kind of oversized jackets, but BOMBER JACKETS! It’s crazy to see a trend be brought back when I was younger (I LOVED them) and to come back in a whole new way. They aren’t just plain and simple or give that pilot look. We now have different prints, better quality, and some with a lil twist.

I’ve seen a few looks that caught my attention immediately. The first one was an oversized bomber paired with a mini skirt. It looks timeless. Straight from the 80s, if we’re being honest. I’ve seen some dramatic sleeves and shoulders too. They currently are making a scene on some of your favorite sites like: Fashion Nova, SHEIN, and ASOS, but it won’t just be for casual or night-out looks. It will be seen this trend in office attire (imagine an oversized blazer and mini/midi skirt set) and for true layered looks during the holidays (coming to a Thanksgiving dinner near you).

There are plenty more trends that will make themselves known throughout the fall. These just happen to be a few of my favorites. Trends will always be here to help guide you, but it’s up to you to decide how to it make your own.

See you in the next one

Xoxo, Jonice 💋
