Well, girl, we made it to September. With everyone talking about “false fall,” football, and back to school, it’s easily one of my favorite months. Not because it finally cools down—because let’s be real, it doesn’t—but for me, it’s all about the fashion. Fashion Week is almost here, and I told myself I had to attend at least one show this season. Taking off work wasn’t even on my radar. I just knew I had to be in the room.
The minute Bishme Cromartie returned to Project Runway Season 20, I was locked in. I’ve always been a fan of that show (and always will be). I was rooting for everybody Black, and his designs had me hooked. So when he won, it was no surprise—it felt like the start of a new chapter where he could do everything on a higher level. Since then, he’s designed for some of your favorite celebs on the red carpet and beyond. Now, with his next chapter, BAROQUE CLAIRVOYANCE, I get to witness it with my own eyes.
I first heard about his show through a VIP ticket giveaway, and you know I wasted no time putting my name in the drawing. But then I had that little nudge—just buy a ticket. There was no way I was missing the opportunity to be at an official NYFW show. Did I manifest this? Absolutely. Right place, right time. And to make it even better, my two worlds collide on the same day—the first game of the football season is also that day. (I almost grabbed a ticket for that too, but I’ll save it for the Bears and Christmas games.) My plan? Watch the first half, then get ready and head out early enough to dodge any traffic that might try me.
But now that the tickets are officially sold out, I have one little problem: I have nothing to wear. I mean, I do—but I deserve something new. I thought about my Hanifa MIYA sweater dress, but something tells me I won’t be the only one in it. And since the motto of the show is “the world is your canvas,” I want to make a statement. I don’t just want to be in the room; I want to be remembered. My look will start conversations, and prayerfully, those conversations will lead to networking and new opportunities.
Pinterest has been my good homegirl, as always. I’ve also been bouncing ideas off a few friends. Right now, I’m stuck on shoes, so today I’ll be at the mall searching for something comfortable enough to carry me through the night and strong enough to build my whole look around. My 30s and Beyond board is giving me all the tease I need, so I’m confident I’ll walk out with something that makes me feel timeless, seasonless, and theatrical. I might even play around and work something thats already in my closet. We’ll see.
See you in the next one,
Xoxo,
Jonice
